View Full Version : Generator squeaks, does not start.

Here's a strange symptom. My generator does not even turn over, but it emits a squeal like you would make by releasing air from a toy balloon by stretching and squeezing the inlet tube. It emits this squeak for about 4 seconds, then goes quiet. I can also see some levers move, and hear it clicking trying to prime. But it does not crank or turn over.
I ran it a couple of weeks ago with no problems. This just occurred suddenly when I tried to start it yesterday.
Additional information - the temperature is not very cold - we have been in Florida for a couple of weeks, using the motorhome.
If you try to start it again immediately, the noise will not happen. If you wait a few seconds, then try, it makes the noise. But it never actually turns over.
All electrical connections appear solid, and the battery is charged up.
Generator is a Generac.

I hope someone has an idea where I should start with diagnosing this.
Thanks in advance.

Sounds like the starter my be bad or hung up. Also check battery connections to the starter. Just guessing.

Hi EZ:
I'm traveling and just came across your post.

What type of generator, type of fuel, and what type of battery do you have to start the generator?

I had a Onan LP in my prior RV. It did just as you stated. It turned out that there was a shut off valve that was partially opened. The propane tank still had some fuel in it, but not enough to run the generator due to the partially shut valve.

Let me know and I'll get back to you.
Safe travels
