You're going to think I am nuts.

Getting older as we are, my wife and I are interested in minimizing the work required to use our little RV. Since the table must be taken off its 2 pedestals and then inserted as the center piece of the bed every night, we are looking for a way to make it happen automatically!

It occurred to me that we could install an electric pedestal to easily move the table up and down....up for dining....down for sleeping. I have been unable to find such a contraption searching the Internet. Any ideas, anyone?

Thanks

How about converting it to this. http://rvpartsoutlet.com/product_info.php?cPath=780_66&products_id=11566 You would just have to fold the 1 leg under and lower the table into position.

Actually, Yachts have been using telescoping pedestals for chairs and tables for some time and the typical manual hardware can be found here:

I expect that they are rather expensive, and here is another vendor that has models that come in powered versions for even more gobs of cash...

The height adjustment range is from about 15 inches to 30 inches and the mechanism protrudes more than 10 inches below "deck" so if your table is on a slide this would not work for you ... All this for only $1141.75 -- WOW.

Thanks for the ideas!

I am seriously thinking about using an electric scissors stabilizer jack....paint it real pretty. Might be an RV "conversation piece!"

Before you invest the time/effort in painting one of those scissors jacks, get a table sized piece of plywood or similar and attach it to one side of the jack and then fasten the other end of the jack to a solid surface like a workbench.

I believe that you will find that it is not wobble-free enough to be the only support for a dining table...

There are gas cylinder powered telescoping lifts for yacht tables available for a few hundred dollars, quite a bit less than the electric ones. Some of these do not need any space below the deck, so it could work even on a slide with no basement under it. If you are handy at making things, perhaps you can adapt an office chair lift gas cylinder to this use you propose -- not as automatic as an electric mechanism, but should be stable and easy to operate with no loose parts to store...

Thanks Chuck. I suspect you are right about the jack.

TUPFAM, your idea is the most promising. I have looked into it and I think it will work...and its cheap! Just need to get the dimensions of that hinge so I know the diff between up and down table top height. Thanks.

tperk,

I have this swing down hardware and folding leg on the table in my 15 year old inexpensive travel trailer that I use for boon-dock camping and hunting. It is functional, but not all that sturdy-- and the leg always seems to be in the way getting into and out of the dinette benches. You can most likely find this table/hardware combination on most small travel trailers on today's dealer lots, so go into one and operate it first to determine if it actually is an improvement over what you have for both seating and for converting to sleep area. The advantage is no loose parts -- but if you have a window at your dinette that is at or just below table height, you might not like the way the table bears against the wall/window framing in that area.
