Hi.
I recently built an inexpensive ladder for the bunks using 3/4" PVC, T's and end caps. I inserted 3/4" dowels in the rungs and verticals to add strength. Painted it with tan plastic paint and attached to the bunks with 3/4" pipe clamps and wood screws. It is out of the way and so far the kids haven't torn it down!
