My 2004 Ford Econoine, BT Cruiser, speedo stopped working. Ford would not touch it and another place said $500. I found a place in Virgina that rebuilt it for $230 and free next day UPS both ways. Sent on Monday got it back on Friday. My BT has wood dash, and was not happy with potentially breaking it.

Here's how to take it out.

Pull off the plastic kick panel under steering wheel. No need to remove anything else.

take a small screw driver and press in on the light switch know where the key slot is. that is a spring retainer to keep knob in place on it's shaft.
Unscrew the black round bezel (no need to remove the light switch.

Two screws up above the IP, remove them.

Now the tricky part, take a flat paint scraper tool, or dinner knife, something flat and put between the upper dash pad and wood bezel (bezel is glued to the whole surround. You are going to remove the wood bezel and plastic subframe in one piece. Keep working the blade around and pop off the retaining tabs.

just before lifting out the panel, undo the electrical connector for aux power/ cig lighters.

Instrument cluster has three electrical connectors to remove.

the real trick is the PRNDL wire. Move the sift lever and watch were the wire meets the selector hook. turn the knob holding the cable to get more play in the wire. When you put it back togther, tie a thing piece of fishing line to the loop and fish it through the knob with the knob in its holder under the dash.
When you put back the selector wire, you need to adjust it for proper indicating PRNDL locations.
