I see that no one's replied and you posted in October. If you're still around, my recommendations would be to obtain a good 'road service' and leave the spare where it is.
I've a bad back also having surgery in '93, and my spare tire is currently located underneath. For flats I carry a small compressor, hose, and a tire flat kit. Now if it's beyond that, totally destroyed, I'm calling the road service.
