Default Battery monitor/Propane monitor issue

We have an interesting issue.

Our battery is fully charged, we had it checked at an auto store. However, the monitor in the RV shows it to 2/3 and never goes any higher. Also, it loses charge very quickly according to the monitor. When the monitor gets to 1/3, the beeping begins. The battery is a 27 and is about 2 months old.

This problem just began this past weekend. Any idea on what the problem might be and what a fix might be?

Thank you.

How did the auto store check it? Did they load test it, or just do a simple voltage test?

You can get a multimeter or a voltmeter and check the battery itself to see what voltage it is reading when your monitor shows it at the different levels. You certainly don't want it to get too low, under 50% of charge (about 12.0 volts), or permanent damage can result.

Have you checked the water levels in the battery cells?

Finally, I would recommend checking the battery cables, the connections at the battery and the connections to the coach. The negative cable to the frame (ground) is very susceptible to rust and corrosion. Good luck.

Thank you for your input. We plan to take the trailer to a repair shop today and see what they find. The connections appear to be fine and there is no need to add water to this particular battery. Hopefully, it will be a simple fix. Thanks again.

Another possibility is that there is a short circuit somewhere in a trailer and it may drain your battery. If you have a multi-meter you can connect it in series between battery terminal and battery cable and see how many AMPs it is drawing. If all devices are turned off it shouldn't be more than few mA

There doesn't appear to be any excessive drain on the battery, just an incorrect battery monitor reading which seems to be setting off the beeping. Thanks for your response.

FYI, The problem I described above was discovered to be an issue with the battery cutoff switch. Problem solved.

It may be the values of the components in the gauge have changed, rendering the inaccurate reading. The car battery test they do at onto stores is simply to rule out a dead cell, and not really good for a deep cycle battery. You could buy a $10 VOM meter and check the voltage yourself and rule the gauge in or out. You could also buy a digital dc volt reading chip from Amazon and wire it in close to the battery. You have to learn the voltages that are considered full and 50%. I think half charge is 12 volts, but regardless, don’t ever discharge below 50% or you decrease the life of the battery dramatically. Good luck.
