Default Mystery Switch

We have just purchased a 2003 Gulf Stream Sun Voyager 8368. There is a typical light switch mounted just under the countertop near the kithcen sink. It has a orange indicator light to tell you when it is on but we don't know what it is for.

Can anyone help?

Thank you in advance

That switch is the water heater gas igniter. When you switch it on, the indicator light will come on and will turn off as soon as the WH is operational on LP gas.

Additional information from the WH instruction manual

ELECTRONIC IGNITION OPERATION
1. Place remote switch in ON position.
2. If remote switch light stays on longer than 15 seconds, place
remote switch in OFF position and wait 5 minutes.
3. Repeat step one.
4. For complete shut-down and before servicing:
a. Place remote switch in OFF position.

On our Tour Master there is also an on/off switch in the outside water heater compartment. Turn on outside as well as the above mentioned inside switch. If my memory serves me correctly our Sun Voyager had the same two switches.

The igniter switch for gas is on the 3-switch status panel. One of the switches is labeled "water heater". The indicator lamp color is green, the ignition warning lamp on the panel is red/orange.

The standard (unidentified) switch with the orange lamp you refered to at the counter is for the electric heater in the water tank. Just because the lamp is lit doesn't mean you are heating water however! You must turn on that other switch in the outside compartment - in order to do that, you must pull the pin out of it's handle to prevent your turning on that switch by accident.

The purpose of all this is to prevent applying power to the element with no water in the tank. It will burn out the element. The madning thing is that the unidentified indicator comes on regardless of whether the element is working or not. GS took the cheap way out by saving the cost of about 4 foot of wire.... and it beats me why they have never labeled the switch; it remains "the mystery switch"

I agree with Bob; on all accounts. One more caveat, you can heat your water with both propane and electric power at the same time. I noted that individually, electric heated our water hotter than propane.

Investigating, I found there are two thermostats, one for each electric and propane. I replaced the propane thermostat and the problem was solved.
