Default Whirring Noise in idle.

Hi all. I have a 2005 Ford Triton V10 powered Independence.
It has recently developed a whirling noise that can only really be heard in the cab. Also the revs at idle seem to vary slightly in time with the sound. When I drop it out of gear the revs also drop right out almost to a stall.
I thought it may be the belts but I’m now thinking air or vacuum.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Fan clutch maybe. If you have a vacuum leak you should have a check engine light.

Thanks for the reply.
No engine light. I’ve read stuff about the IAC. Would a problem with that bring an engine light on?
My first thought was a belt or the fan but I can’t get in to spray silicon on them.

Test the fan and see if it locks up when the engine is warmed up. It should spin freely when cold and lock up when hot. When it spins freely try and feel if the bearing is bad. Does the fan wiggle like it may fall right off? Spin roughly?

Thanks for this.
I’ve just tried it ‘warm’ it turns but with some resistance. I’ll let the engine cool right down and try it again.
I’ll jeep you posted.
Thank you.

Default Noise Problem

I had the same problem with my v10. It was one of the cables that has a loose plastic cover that was rubbing on the fan. It started after I replaced the engine battery.

I’ll have a good look over it when I check the fan rotation.
Thanks

Hi all. Everything seems fine with belts pulleys and fan. I’ve tied to locate the sound with some acrobatics and getting my head down by the pedals. The noise is more audible there and not at all outside or when the engine cover is off.
I’m wondering could it be a relay or something that will sound intime with the engine?
Many thanks.

Maybe interference in your electronics. Had this with a radio once.

Yes I’m wonder that myself now. I’m hoping someone may shed some light on that theory.
The radio buzzes but that’s a common thing with Gas engines. It’s always done that, but this noise has started since we’ve had the RV. It’s very difficult to pin down the source so any suggestion are welcome.
Thank you.

Thank you to all those who have offered suggestions as to the possible source of my whining noise. At long last I think I may have narrowed it down to a slight noise from the power steering pump that gets amplified through the steering column up into the footwell, where it echoes around and drives me nuts.
I’ve googled and apart from the obvious try a new pump, some say flushing and replacing the fluid can sort it out.
Does anyone have any experience of this and did it work?

Thanks folks

Get a bottle of Lucas "Power Steering" additive. I bet the fluid is just low. If not try a turkey baster and suck the fluid out and re-fill with the Lucas stuff.

I check the fluid regularly and it’s always ok. Im sure it was the blisteringly got weather we had since that’s when it started. I’ll try the addative before I go draining down etc.
Thanks very much.

Look for pinched, kinked, collapsed PS hoses. Hot weather could have weakened a hose.

I think this is going to be answer. The fluid is ok for level. I check it all regularly. I think the fluid boils in the very hot weather we’ve had and has bubbles in it. I’m gonna see if a bottle of this sorts it out. If so I’ll get the system flushed properly.
Thanks for the tip.

Bubbles usually mean the pump is failing. Especially if it's not leaking anywhere and the fluid level is correct.
