I have a 2008 6331, it does not have an exhaust brake. When going down hill what should the procedure be to not have to use too much brake?

We have a 6362 2008. We had the exhust brake put on. Due to the same problem as you. I want to save my brakes.
PM me and I'd be happy to discuss it with you.

Technique is called surge braking. Put the brakes on and slow down 5-10 mph, then let off and let speed raise while brakes allowed to cool. Repeat to keep speed at level under control. Unless you are on a very steep decline and lot of weight, it should not be problem and not overheat your brakes if you do proper surge braking.

Downshifting trans is good idea to help. Exhaust brake is not part of the std VT365 engine. Exhaust brake just chokes down the exhaust, it is not the same a Jake brake like on bigger trucks. An engine has to be designed for Jake brake, VT365 is not and your only option is the exhaust brake added on aftermarket if you want that.
