Default Brakes for tow vehicle

I'm towing a 2000 # car. Do I need to have a brake buddy or similar device for it? I'm driving a 2004 Sun Voyager

Would you rather have the brakes on the Tow help stop you 2 feet before the collision or not have them and stop 2 feet after the collision???

Dave,

In California the law requires supplemental braking for towed weights in excess of 1500 pounds. Your 2000 pound car is right at the limits for most other states, and if you have any personal items in the car (or have a full gas tank, etc.) you are most likely over that 2000 pound "curb weight" anyway.

Here is a good summary of the rules state by state:

Two sets of laws in play here. State laws and the law of inertia.
Why mess around with mother nature, get a braking system!
