Default FRED or Gas

I am close to buying a 2007 Sun Voyager 8389. But am still confused about what engine to get. Please let me know your feelings about if it is better to have a Freightliner/Chevy Vortec or the 340 hp Cummings FRED. Which one has better towing power and capacity. Is the gas mileage about the same? Your info will be much appreciated. John

More than power, life expectancy. Diesel is king for power and strength. Diesel costs more than gas, fuel, engine and maintenance, cost more.
I am not familiar with the models you are looking at but all diesels that I am aware of have air suspension, and gas is on springs. There is no comparison in ride, air is much better.
The reason most diesels have rear engine is for noise, it is much more pleasant driving without the engine noise.
This is just imho.

I own the 07 8389 FRED and would not trade it for anything. I average 10 MPG towing and close to 14 MPG not towing driving 60-65 MPH. As far as the Noise I really can not tell the engine is running....... Hope this helps

We have a 2007 Gulfstream SunVoyager FRED. No air suspension. We get 10 mpg if we drive slow or 8.5 plus if we drive in the low to mid 70's. The clutch fan runs and is pretty noticeable when the temp is near or above 90 outside. We like it! Would prefer a pusher but don't think a gas motor would even compare... The power hauling the car doesn't even compare to the V-10 gas class C we previously had.

No doubt about the Diesel vs Gas. Gas motors are no where near as heavily built as Diesel front or rear.

Like the other posts say, NO comparison a gas to a diesel. I have had both and the diesel rules as far as power and longevity. As far as miles per gallon, the diesel will do better then the V-10. I used to get 8.5 mpg on a V-10 engine. I get the same with my diesel pusher, But every article I read about the FRED it gets real good mileage. I have read as much as 11.5 mpg.
The Fred does not have air ride as far as I know. But the engine will last you three times longer then a gasoline engine.
