Default Why st's go bad?

One theory is the ST tires sit for long periods and the UV gets them. Well I had 2 class C motor homes before I got 2 5th wheels and now I'm getting a small trailer.

Well my class C motor homes sat as much as my pull units, and sucked up just as much UV rays and over the life of both both class C units I never had a blow out. Of course these didn't have ST tires.

Then I got my 5th wheels with ST tires and blow outs became a way of life. I used E rated tires on the 16" wheels. All tires never exceeded 3 years of age. I used high pressure valves, tires were balanced, and pressure was always checked each day of travel. There was no uneven wear patterns, just good looking tires that went boom.

ST tires, Hmm.

Last blow out I had, the tire guy said the steel belts rusted and he showed me the rust. Tires looked perfect on the outside. Very inconvenient and expensive on the road. I had to replace all 4 on the back as a set.

How many people have had blow outs on non ST tires? 1997 to 2019 zero blow outs on car, truck, and class C. In same time 7 ST blow outs, on my 5th wheels, no flats.

On my last 2 trailers I swapped in larger axles, once loaded they were at or over capacity. I then started parking on metal plates because tires will wick in moisture and rust the belts, also have to watch date codes, don't jinx me but since I've been doing it this way I've had no blow outs

No problem with your method, I just didn't have to do anything on the class c units.

I've had two ST tires fail. Both failed due to the piece of metal that was still stuck in the tread. In one of those cases I also lost one of the tires on my TV (it's not just vacation, it's an adventure!)

I've never had an ST tire fail for any other reason. I run mine at 3/4 their rated weight capacity, never more than 60 mph. Something many people don't know: Many cheap (and OEM) ST tires are rated for a maximum of 65 mph. Many who do know might drive 75 on a trip because they're in a hurry, and notice no ill effect ... but the tire fails several months later from cumulative damage that started when they drove it over the rated limit.

Just a couple things to consider.

I agree with atreis. I find this video to be dead on as well. RV trailers and fifth wheels are mostly weight challenged. Is the weight evenly distributed? Left to right, front axle to rear axle? My guess is that a lot of the time, tires are taking on more than they should. They also yank and push and distort tires differently with a multiple axle set-up when turning sharply vs. a vehicle with axles far apart.

I've seen the video. By the way if he had checked the tires he talked about are readily available on line.

Ok Larry, if my trailer is 4500 lbs loaded how much reserve should I have according to the video. What % reserve would be ideal? I'll be getting new tires in a week or so. Thank's if anyone replies.

RCO, if I were you, I would get the Maxxis 175/80R13, Load C, 6 ply, rated at 1360 lbs/tire x 4 = 5,440. If your trailer fully loaded is 4,500 lbs, then that is 82.7% of the full capability. Remember, in the video he says the U-haul would be at 85% of max, so 82.7% is great! I'd call Discount Tire, or other local shops and ask if they can order Maxxis M8008 trailer tires, Maxxis part # TL08696000. (They don't make a load range D in the 13")

Happy travels!

Well, I picked up the unit Sunday. I don't know the axle capacity yet because it won't stop raining. In the cabinet I see the cargo could go to 2300 LBs, or 5780 GW. I don't need to run it that heavy.

It's a shame that Maxxis doesn't make a D rated tire in 175/80/13 or 185/80/13.
