I was wondering what brake system you use on your toad and why?

Trickto322, I use the SMI Silent Partner (www.smibrake.com (http://www.smibrake.com)) it is easy to install and easy to use plus it can be controlled from the coach as to the amount of braking you want almost like a trailer brake.

I have been using the US Gear system for 14 months now and I am very happy with it. I installed it myself, not that hard to do. You need to check out the different systems on their web sites.

I have a Roadmaster Add a Brake from Camping World. I have used it once and now carry it in the coach if I am ever stopped and requested by the law to install it. It is one that applies a predetermined amount of brake through a small compressor built in to the box you install in the toad. I did not like the delay for release of the brake and felt it cost me some fuel mileage. Also, my coach and toad do not exceed the GCWR of the coach so I have plenty of brakes with the coach brakes alone. It would be nice to have the breakaway feature but not important enough for me to go through the hassle of installing the unit every time I attach the toad. If I were to do it again, I would install a unit that works with the brakes on the coach and applies brakes evenly when needed.

We have the US Gear unified tow brake. Long View did the installation. The ease of operation is what interested us in the system.

I have been using a Brakebuddy for the past four years and it has been very reliable and has saved me a couple of times due to those unforseen events on the road. I installed it myself and have used it on two different MH's

IMHO I am sure that in the near future there will be mandatory use of these devices in most states. I believe some states require them now.

I have been using the Brake Buddy for the last four years and on two different toads. It has been a good brake system with no problems.

I, too, use a Brake Buddy Vantage (the red one.)

First, kudos for worrying about having an auxiliary brake on your toad. I could work out the physics for you, but suffice it to state that any towed vehicle becomes a ram-rod when you have to panic stop. If an accident occurs (God forbid), having a brake system may help you with your insurance company.

I chose U.S.Gear's unified brake system. It stops proportional to my coach, and has a separate controller so I can adjust the braking in my towed Jeep, as well as a way to "dynamite" the brakes in the Jeep. There is nothing to hook up apart from the electrical
7-->6 line from the coach to the Jeep, along with a breakaway line. Plug, Clip, I'm done.
The unit is permanently mounted in the Jeep, outta sight and outta the way.

Whatever works for you. Check them & price out.
Safe travels
Rick

thanx for the info. I have been using a dolly with surge brakes.

I saw the U.S. Gear system for $759 at PPL on the net however I ordered my tow bar and base plate from them and the shipping is terrible. Waited 15 days and still no delivery.
