Most work from the cruise control.

Yep! Mine works from the cruise control. But I have only used it once. I have read where it is not a good idea to idle diesel engines like the ones we have for long periods at a time.

Excuse my ignorance on the subject, but what is a "Fast Idle" and what purpose does it serve?

Fast idle is just that. You increase the idle speed to around 1500 so that a proper amount of oil lubricates the turbo charger and aides in complete combustion of the fuel in the cylinders. You can idle at a fast idle for long times without causing damage to the engine.

Thanks. So how do I operate the fast idle from the cruise control? I assume you do this at start-up before pulling out. All I've ever done is sit there with my foot on the pedal.

My cruise control is on the turn signal lever and to set the idle I push the slide switch to the right and hold it there until the engine speeds up. With a little practice you will be able to set the engine RPMs.

You just slide the button on the cruise control and hold it for a second. Mine is the same as Hayes.
