Rubber roof repairs

I have a leak somewhere in the rubber roof. I want to replace all of the sealant. What is the best way to remove the old sealant.

Use a plastic scraper and do it when the sealant is warm from sitting in the sun or maybe use a hair dryer to warm up the sealant. Have you thought of using Eternabond tape?
