'Play' means slop in one or more components. The only way to fix slop is to replace the worn out components.

I had a problem like that several years back on a Ford F-250 and it was the tie rods that needed changing out. While on the truck you could not see any play, but after they removed them, I was shocked at how much play they had. I would not mess around with adjustments to the box, you could really mess it up and dangerous.

You might also check out the "caster wheel alignment setting". The more +caster the less play in the steering wheel. Google "caster wheel alignment setting for your chassis".
I have a 2007 BT Cruiser model 5291B on a 2006 Ford Chassis and the Ford spec for caster setting is (-1 to + 7). Try to get it above +5 and you will stop having to rock the steering wheel back and fourth to keep it in a straight line.
