Tourmaster front axle bearings

Hi everybody,

Just bought a 2007 Tourmaster T40A. 104000mi. Just awesome.

I replaced the front tires yesterday and the bearings were grinding on both sides so they needed to be replaced as well. I spoke with the previous owner and he had replaced them twice before, the last time at around 80k, so 25kmi ago. Is that normal or is it possible that they weren't maintained. I'm not sure if they're sealed or require repacking annually. (forgot to ask)

For my fellow owners, what are you guys seeing? Thanks a lot!

Wheel bearings in general; The first set went bad because of rough conditions. The following sets went bad because someone was trying to save money and did a sub standard repair.
No matter what, you fix this with a good mechanic and follow what they say to do. Then you will get some trouble free miles without worrying about greasing them.

Hey thanks and concur. I'm just wondering if these are 30k mile replacement interval or you should get a heck of a lot more mileage on a Class A like mine. When I replaced the front tires, they were significantly out of round so that probably accelerated their wear.

Had a front end alignment done as well although the guys that did the tires and bearings indicated that there was no camber or caster in the tires as the previous place indicated, they were just run too underinflated.

For the long term owners, what have you seen as a bearing replacement interval on your Class A if all things are correctly maintained such as inflation and tire pressure?

I have around 76 K miles on my coach. I bought it brand new in 2003. I have never repacked the bearings and so far the tires wear perfect. Some ride! I will probably repack the bearings at 100K miles.

Never had to do anything to the bearings on my motorhome but haven't had one over 50K yet. On the cars I had to replaced them on the originals usually last over 75K. If I cut corners on the bearing, bought the cheaper one, sometimes they go bad in 30K. Having said that, it would be really easy to mess up a wheel bearing job. I went to bearing school for GM and there a lot of things to know about before you can do it right.

Wanted to add; There's no 'repacking'. Only replacing. Jack up your front end and spin the wheels. If they spin smoothly the bearings are fine. Push and pull to see if there is side play. If there is you can tighten the spindle nut. That's all the maintenance there is.

The front hubs/bearings have gear oil in them not grease. There is a sight glass on each side to check the oil level. I had previous coach 13 years with no bearing problems and current 2008 Tourmaster 40A for 9 years with no problems! Tourmaster has 42,000 miles and is for sale!
