anyone know what the roof is made of ? it seems to be a textured fiberglass of some sort? how thick is it? is there wood under it? does this rv have wood or metal roof trusses? Can i screw into the roof or do i need to find a roof truss of some sort or wood backing for proper hold down strength ?

JB,

Below is the diagram and key to how the Tour Master construction is done, including the roof. I believe that your Crescendo is very similar. For strength, you need to attach through the fiberglass and sheathing to the structural aluminum tube framing (item #6...).

Thank you, any idea how thick the under layments are to judge the screw length needed?

No definitive data on thickness of the roof structure that I can find -- but look at the vents/exhaust fans and the skylight in the shower to get an idea. My guess is the framing is 2 inch square or less...

What are you trying to mount? How heavy/bulky is it? Is it going somewhere that a previous device was mounted so you know that there is some structure there? (I replaced a crank up TV antenna with an electronic/automated one so that mounting spot was a known braced area...)

Sealing the fastener penetrations against water egress is the most important thing after strength considerations.

wanting to mount a mini dome dish playmaker satellite dome on roof.

Let me suggest you do NOT use silicone on your roof. Get some Butyl tape, use that under the feet at the mount points (seal the penetration's) and a tube of Dicor self leveling sealant is good to ensure all is water tight after the install (that's what we use at RV Dealerships).

The plywood sheeting under the roof material will hold your dish with #8 screws.
