Hello RVer's ! Does anyone know for sure if you need a class b endorsement in Illinois to drive a class a ? I can't get a straight answer from DMV or the highway patrol. All I know is that my DL is only good for 16,000 lbs so I'm well over that. Anyone out there in Illinois got pulled over and has had it verified?

many states don't have ANY restrictions on needing any 'extra' qualifications to drive your OWN Class A RV, no matter the size or weight, which is why some don't even know what you are referring to, much less how to help you. The few states that do are generally are due to weight(over 26,000lbs), or over a certain length, such as 40', etc.
NC is one that is 'over 26,000 lbs', and CA is one that is over 40' in length, but ONLY for those owners who RESIDE there/get their LICENSE there/TAG their RV there.

But, you have to check with YOUR state to find out - Illinois may just be one.

Thanks for your reply, yea I think some states ( Illinois included) should be able to make it more black and white for you, how hard would that be !

Recreational Vehicle
When using a recreational vehicle primarily for personal use, you do not need to obtain a
CDL. From Illinois 'Rules of the Road'- August 2020

Note: Some states do require an endorsement on your license if your RV has air brakes, however. The more you know.
