Supposedly this will/can occur if you fill your tank to near full. I now only fill to 3/4 approx and haven't seen a reocurrance of the dissapearing act.

Yes, it can siphone of the overflow, but you will have lots of water on the ground.
OP says he does not see any water on the ground or anywhere else. So it is kind of a mystery if you ask me.
