We have bracelets like Velcro small belts that runs across the ridge of the awning and we hold our outside cord lights in them. They have a little plastic pin that goes in the ridge and makes it very easy to put on, change distances and then take them out! I can’t remember the brand right now but I’m sure they aren’t hard to find.
