I’d start with the equipment manufacturer’s website and read the installation instructions. I use a Blue Ox set up primarily as when I’m not towing, there’s nothing hanging off the front of my vehicle. In the case of Blue Ox, the instructions tell you every step necessary to install the base plate. This varies greatly vehicle to vehicle. I use a Ready Brake which as a “brake in a box” requires no installation but must be connected and disconnected each time you tow. This action takes about 2 minutes at each end of the trip. You also need lighting wiring and a break away switch but again, the instructions will give you an idea of complexity and an estimate of the time required.
I’ve towed three different vehicles. The first I did the work myself as for that vehicle it was very simple. The second and third, I had the dealer do as I bought the new vehicle. We made the deal as to price then I asked that they do the installation. I bought the kits and the dealership shop installed it. Took them 4-5 hours but didn’t cost me anything past the agreed upon price of the vehicle.
