Default Newbie charging question

We just purchased a 1997 Sun Sport 8325 motorhome on a Ford F53 chassis with a 30 amp system. If I plug into house power the inverter/charger? runs all the time or at least for the day it was plugged in. When I run the generator, it does not come on. We have not tried a 30 amp park pedestal yet so that will be next.
Is the thing running because the amperage is so low? Will this harm the unit? I have since not plugged into the house power for my lack of knowledge on this.

If you say it converter runs because you hear FAN, the fan runs based on LOAD/ temp, so it maybe just LIGHTS (if you still have old Incandescent), or Low Battery (Charger). I have barely heard mine run since changing bulbs to LED. Check BATTERY WATER LEVEL lately? Good Luck p.s. OTHER 12vdc appliances are also a LOAD

Thank you for your reply. The converter/charger did not have a fan as it is an old Magnetek 6345 unit. I have replaced it with an upgrade kit from BestConverter. A 3 stage 8900 series WFCO converter/charger.
It now has a cooling fan, better protected circuits and a status light and a much better charger. And it is very quiet and no longer gets warm. The old unit had a reputation of overcharging batteries and sure enough both the 3 year old coach batteries were toast so replaced them as well.
