Default How robust are our alternators?

I tow an RV trailer with lithium batteries and while I have solar for primary charging I'm thinking of adding a DC-DC charger to top them off if weather isn't cooperating. From what I gather, we have 220 amp alternators in the CD. Would it be safe to add a 40 amp DC-DC converter or should I go with a 20 amp model?

Default Go for it

Best hookup for b2b is to add a switch to turn it on at highway speed. The alternator gets hottest under load at idle. I was able to use a 40 amp b2b on a 190 amp alternator for over 5 years by just running it at high speed. Love the ability to charge the house batteries from the engine.

Good luck.
