Default 2006 Tour Master Converter

When installing new 12V coach batteries on my 2006 Tour Master T40A, I inadvertantly touched the hot wire from the converter to the ground on one of the batteries. I fear I have blown the fuses on the converter. I have no idea where the converter is. I know it is plugged in to the 110 outlet in the compartment where the power cord drum is. I also know that it is a 9200 series intellipower converter. Anyway that is the literature and manual that came with the motorhome. I am familiar with these converters and have installed several. Can someone help me with the location of the converter as there are two fuses on the converter itself?

Eureka! I found the converter. It is under the bed along with the transfer switch and a mirriad of wires and other electrical equipment. It is an 80 amp intellipower 9180 and it has three 30 amp fuses. All three we blown and all is well now. I'm sure glad it was just the fuses, but I guess that's why they are there.

I always turn the two big electric switches off when working on the batteries.

On my coach the transfer switch is in the inverter/charger unit. I thought yours would also be in the inverter/charger.

You would think. But, the box clearly said automatic transfer switch on it. Some inverters also have the converter in it, mine doesn't. Since we are full timers and we don't have a residential type refrigerator I don't really have much use for an inverter. But, the dealer I bought from did put 4 brand new 6V batteries in it. I wonder though, could I run the Norcold refrigertor on the inverter while going down the road? Or, would the heating elements on the Norcold drag down the batteries too fast?

I use the propane while traveling or driving the coach to destination. I have never had any problems using the LP setting.

I have never used the inverter for the refrigerator while driving. I have read that some coaches you can do that, but I have never tried it. I suppose that if your coach house batteries get charged with the big engine alternator plus the chassis batteries there would be no reason for the house batteries to drain down with the heating element and the fan. But again I am not sure. I will do some research and see what I find out.

Even if you run the refer on LP you have to have 12V to run the fan on the refer and the controls. I'm talking about running the refer on AC off the inverter. If you leave the refer on auto that's what it will go to if have the inverter on.

I have a 3000 watt inverter on my coach. I have a trip coming up from Barstow California to Morgan Hill northern California. I will try running my fridge off the inverter only and see what happens to my house batteries. If I see on the Heart interface panel that my batteries are going down, I will switch it back to LP.

Unless you set up is much different then mine, there are two 12V house batteries for all your 12V lights, thermostats etc.. These are charged off the converter when you are plugged in to 110V. Running the inverter off the four 6V batteries associated with it will have no effect on the 12V house batteries. On my inverter panel there is a guage to tell you how much inverter battery life you have left.

My understanding of converters is that their purpose is to keep an even voltage and frequency needs to be converted for us Americans into 110 volts 60 cycles especially while traveling in foreign countries where they use 50 cycles or 220 volts. It also fine tunes the dirty currents that have too much variation to protect sensitive electrical components on your coach.

Not sure what you mean by when you state that your refrigerator would feed off the converter? Now I can see where it would run off an inverter because all that inverter is doing is inverting off your 12 volt batteries and churning up 110 volts.

The inverter has nothing to do with your 12V house batteries it inverts 12V DC from your four 6V batteries (and charges them, when plugged in to shore power) to 110V AC so you can run 110V appliances when you are not connected to shore power or running the genset. The converter converts 110V AC to 12V DC to charge your house batteries and supply 12V to everything in the coach that uses it. When plugged into shore power. In my coach when I first got it that incluced the TV's which now have been replaced by HD TV's.
