Hello! I can't open either side of the pass-through compartment doors on my 23RSS Vista Cruiser. Seems very odd that both latches failed on the same day, and I am reluctant to reef the open as I don't want to break anything, but really need to get in there to access all my tools, hoses etc. Has anyone had this issue? Any advice on how to break in there? Too far away from any repair center, so this will have to be a DIY job. Please help!!!
The keys do turn the tumbler, so it seems like they must be the right key, but it does still seem locked. Pulling up on the latch doesn't accomplish anything to release. That is what made me think I am just missing something. I have opened them before without any issue. But maybe there is a secret button somewhere that somehow got pushed? I am getting desperate. If anyone has the Vista Cruiser RSS23 and could just let me know when the compartment doors are open, where is the actual latch mechanism so I can try the pry bar method.
I have a 21 Vintage Cruiser 23RSS so they most likely are similar. Is your pass through packed or emptied? If packed there a chance the inside release tab may be fouled. If empty try pushing on the bottom of the door while you lift the handle. I believe there are external screws on the hinge that can be removed and allow you to remove the door.
EDIT: I just looked at my pass through doors and there are not external screws on the hinge. Sorry.
Thanks for the replies. Any chance I could get you to post a photo of the open latch mechanism from the RSS23? Looks like I am going to have to jimmy it and it would be helpful to know the location and type of latch so I can do the least amount of damage.
Unfortunately the max file size on the forum is 2meg for JPG and the picture I took is over 3. I did find a way to get it open with only minimal damage that could easily be fixed but rather not post it on a public forum. To assure the doors are unlocked mine key slot is vertical when unlocked.
Okay. Lock vertical. That is good info. I had to leave the trailer and haven't had a chance to try the pushing the lower door in. And GulfStream advised WD40...will attempt both those this weekend. Starting to get cold up here, so I'd really love to be able to dial it in for winter...Again, I really appreciate the input.
I just thought of something that may help. I use plenty of thumb pressure above the lock cylinder pressing in on the handle as well as pulling out with my fingers below. It makes a big difference in how easily it opens.
Goodness that lock sure has seemed to be quite a problem!!! From the look of things that lock assembly design must be terrible to have to do all the things mentioned is this thread! After gaining access to the compartment I would most certainly re-engineer that whole lock assembly!! Good luck though I do hope the end result is without damage..
