Default 1990 GS Conquest, A/C question

Hi all!! We are new to the forum! We purchased a used 1990 GS Conquest, 25 ft. We show our dogs at dog shows so decided this would be easier on us and them than motel life! And we are getting ready to retire and travel This thing had one and only owner and they have given us a file box with every oil change, repair, etc. Immaculate re done condition!! However, the cab A/C is blowing but not cold, just cool. I'm thinking it needs to be recharged. Should we take it in to a mechanic and have that done or could it be swapped to that R134 or whatever it is? Any info on this would be greatly appreciated!!

Hi: Congrats on your new Toy.
It would be my suggestion for the few bucks it would cost, have a Qualified Mechanic check and if needed do a recharge.
If you have ever recharged a A/C unit in a car, it is the same on the RV. It may be easier to have someone do it besides,
you have someone tol go back to if there is trouble.

If your freon has leaked out putting new freon is only a temporary fix as there's a reason it is leaking and that needs to be addressed.

Concur that the A/C system on your engine is no different than any regular vehicle. Any A/C shop can look at your MH and figure out what is going on to make it cool, not cold.

1990 is most likely R-12, and unless you have major problems it is best to keep that for best performance out of the system. Converting can work but the main limiting factor with R-134a is that it requires a more efficient condenser (the thing in front of the radiator). Which can be a pain to change out. The stock R-12 condenser will work OK, not great, with R-134a.

Since you can't buy R-12 without a license for it, the A/C shop can recharge for you. They are supposed to fix any leaks before charging up, so it won't be a $50 recharge and go.

You can buy r12 off of ebay , all one needs to do is say a "professional" will be doing the installation. Don't know where you're from but it's still legal in Mexico and cheap. Most A/c shops there do great work.
