Unhappy Batteries

I have a Tour Master 40F Gulfstream Class A motorhome. Trying to figure out which batteries are the Coach and the chassis batteries. All the batteries are located on the left rear side. The top rail has to 12 volt batteries with a lot of cables attached to the front and rear of the batteries, each battery has for four post with an enclosed nut on top securing the cables. The bottom tray has four batteries with normal cables like a car and some of the cables are short that are connecting batteries together. While driving the RV the digitally display stated low battery voltage. Assuming all four of the batteries need to be replaced. First time this occurred. Drove the RV 34 miles with the generator running shut the engine off but left the switch on to listen to the radio. Does anyone have any suggestions before I replace the four batteries.

The Chassis batteries are the (2) batteries paralleled together. The House batteries are the (4) batteries paralleled together. Your inverter charger should charge the House batteries from either shore power or from the generator. You have (2) possibilities, either your batteries are bad or your inverter charge is bad. Either possibility is expensive.

If you are comfortable with your abilities to troubleshoot electrical you can do the following.

If you have a multi-meter I would check the DC voltage the House battery bank is sitting at with no generator or shore power. If you are under 11.8V your batteries are probably toast.
You can check each battery individually but that requires removing the cables. If you do remove the batteries you can also charge them individually with a smart charger and see if they hold charge. If your batteries are removed you can check the output of your inverter charger with shore power or the generator running.
Again these are things you must be comfortable to work on, deep cycle batteries are 12V but have huge amount of available current. You must be extremely careful and methodical when working with a battery bank. Take pictures of every connection before you start so you have a reference to put it back. Hope this helps.

Surprised that your T-40F does not have a third bank of batteries for the inverter -- my 2007 year model T-40C did. That third bank was up under the windshield where you have the access door for the diesel generator. There are two quarter-turn fasteners that open that access door/panel. That bank is four each of 6-volt golf cart style batteries...

What year is your rig? Do you have pictures of your battery compartment?

Generally, the two 12v are start batteries for chassis/ engine, and the other 4 are for the coach power.
