Default Tire Pressure/Gas Mileage

I’ve heard and read a lot of conflicting info on tire pressure, max the tire is rated for, 75%, even a very convoluted math equation with tire rating and GVRW on the trailer itself. We’re about to take a trip from Maine to Lake George NY and I’m curious, based on other people’s previous experiences, if increasing tire pressure could potentially help increase our MPG? Any input would be much appreciated.

Tony,

Does your trailer have a sticker on it with recommended tire pressures? For me, whatever the sticker says is my minimum. Whatever the tire max. pressure on the sidewall says is the maximum. Those numbers might be the same, or they might not. That may help and it may not, but I hope it makes sense.

As far as MPG, have you seen the document put out by Cummins? It is for semi-trucks, but I think the research, findings and conclusions are applicable for RVers. The rock solid rules are on page 4, and the rest of the guide goes more in depth on all topics. Enjoy! https://welove.com/wp-content/upload...el-Economy.pdf

My tires call for 60psi cold so that's what they get.

Is that the max they’re rated for?

Max cold pressure marked on tires.

As for mileage, yes, tires inflated to a higher pressure should have less rolling resistance, all else being equal. However, that difference is miniscule when compared to the resistance added by towing a large wall, and the large vacuum that forms behind that flat back.

To get better mileage, drive slower.
