Default Generator Problems

I have a 2002 Onan Emerald Plus (Spec P) 4.8 kW generator installed in my motorhome. The engine will start, run for a few seconds, and then it stops. I checked the air cleaner, spark plug wires, and fuses. All are clean and tight. Any suggestions for the next step would be appreciated.

Not sure how you start/stop your gen, but maybe the switch is stuck thus starting and then stopping the generator. Just a guess that maybe it is a wire issue.

Default Switch

Thanks for the reply, but I have the same symptoms regardless of the location used to start the generator. This happened last week, but I was finally able to get it started and ran it for the recommended two hour monthly run. I was thinking that I should change the fuel filter.

Default Generator

You might want to check the low oil sensor and wire running to it. Bob

I had a similiar issue with a (different model) Onan Generator, and it ended up being low on oil. I would eventually get it to start and run (once the oil heated up enough). I would check the sensor or the oil level.

Larry,

Is you fuel tank at least 1/3 full? The generator is supposed to shut down when your tank reaches about ? full. It will shut down as you described when it gets too low.

It sounds to me like it is running out of fuel. Check your fuel filter and change it out if possible. If it is still acting the same way check to see how much fuel you have on your motorhome fuel tank. If it is below the 1/4 it will shut down the generator.
