Default Brakes

Have new vintage 23 mbs cannot find information on whether brakes are manual or self adjusting.

Most trailers are ELECTRIC MAGNETIC BRAKES, and common is DEXTER Brand AXLE/ hubs, you can find/ download DEXTER SERVICE MANUALS for info/ research, or you may have another brand?

They engage electrically, but require manual adjustment for pad to drum clearance.

I understand that they are electromagnetic but some are self adjusting and some need to be manually adjusted. Cannot find information on what my trailer is equipped with short of removing a wheel and drum to find out.

Little rubber plug at bottom inside of your brake assembly will remove easy enough to see inside and adjust if necessary.
