John reported ABS, brake pressure, brake fluid lights, and a constant buzzer on a 2008 Gulfstream International 4200, asking whether there is a pressure switch or sensor he can replace and where the ABS control module is located. Members said this chassis may use either a Hydro-Max style brake setup or, more specifically for the 4200, a Meritor pump system mounted on the driver-side frame rail, visible from the battery compartment area or between the frame rails behind the transmission...

Hello all,

I have the Motorhome listed above and I am having the ABS, Brake pressure and brake fluid lights with the annoying buzzer. I have found this is a common problem and people have needed the ABS control module?? Is there a pressure switch or sensor I can replace myself to see if it an easy fix? Also where is this control module located.

Thanks, John

If you have the Hydro-Max brake system - electric pump backup to the booster normally powered by hydraulic pressure from the power steering pump, vs. vacuum - I had problems with mine, on a 2006 C5500 chassis. First thing to check is "ground" for the module (you'll have to find the wiring diagrams for the chassis), but there is a litany of actual troubleshooting steps you can do, vs. just throwing parts at it (once you figure out how the system works - that's on-line too). Don't count on a lot of help from the ODBII codes - if there are any - as I found that the PCM might not fully communicate with the brake control module. Also - GM moved on to new ABS/BCM modules - couldn't find our part-number, except "pull-off's" - that in no way would I trust. I finally isolated the problem to internally-generated "noise," and incorrect signaling between the brake switch and the module, which caused the electric backup pump to constantly cycle on and off, and then run continuously when the pedal was pressed, all while the engine was running and providing correct hydraulic pressure. So...no "new" modules to be had, only untrusted pull-off's, and three "re-builders" in the U.S. - all of them upwards of $1000 to repair, but nope, not my part-number. Found a company in Canada - How to place an order | XeMODeX Inc. - 2-day turnaround, lifetime guarantee, WAY cheaper than the U.S. outfits, and if it doesn't properly "fix" the problem, send it back and they'll make it right. I did, they did, and it DID work. I still didn't have the "comms" with the PCM, but the brakes worked correctly and I was pleased with that. If you have other questions, shoot me a mail.

It's between the frame rails behind the transmission, drivers side with two large rectangular "Epic" connectors. I suggest that you flush the brake system, make sure the supply voltage is not too low (batteries, cables, feed wire to the control). It's a frequent failure and is about $400 US last time I replaced mine (2007 4200, international VT365). It's not a bad job.

The 4200 chassis has the merititor pump system. It is located on the frame rail on the drivers side . You can see it if you open the battery compartment door and look past the batteries. It is a common failure point on the GS and school bus chassis. No owner serviceable parts on it as it is all sealed. Eventually it will go into failure mode and you will only get ‘creep mode’ to go about 3 mph. When mine went it was about $4200 to replace the pump unit.

Do a search on this site, I recall there was a thread on this a few years back.

do you still have brakes? if so there could be a problem with the can bus communication. I had this problem come to find out a mouse had chewed a wire or two. international dealership charged me about $400 for installing two butt splice connectors. thing I never could find the spot it was well worth it. and yes that buzzer is very annoying. good luck
