Black tank inlet depth

Had some trouble with my 2022 golf stream Amerilite 279BH over the weekend. We just bought it and used it for the first time. I'm curious if the dealer clean it out good or if retained water from winterizing. The tank filled up quicker then my last camper and waste gurgled coming up the inlet. Black tank pipe inlet depth is 2 inches from bottom of tank, is that normal? Seems like it's very close to the bottom. Not sure where the vent pipe depth is at. I plan on measuring it soon. I'm worried that I'm losing some space in my storage tank due to inlet depth being so far down. Tank is 36 gal, 56in x 27in x 5.5in and tapers to 7in at outlet. Can tank be used if waste water reaches bottom of inlet pipe? Appreciate any comments.

update. the vent pipe is around 2.75 in from bottom of tank. Just seems silly to waste a couple inches of black tank volume, since it will be burping. Unless i'm overlooking something or don't understand Gulf Streams design install.

Not an expert, but that doesn't seem right. I'm not sure I want to know how you got those measurements! They just slap rigs together fast, so it probably is just carelessness in the manufacturing that caused this rather than design. It seems to me that the main issue is the vent pipe. Getting that up as high as possible and out of the waste would allow the gasses to escape and stop the gurgling.

It would be nice to get the bottom of the inlet up higher too so you don't get blockage of free movement within the tank. So sorry you have to deal with it. Best of luck

I read somewhere that the inlet is usually at the highest part of the tank which may be 3-1/2 and not the 5-1/2 inches i measured from outside the camper. My measurement of 2 inches for inlet depth is from inside the camper with a tape measure down to bottom of tank. I then pull back up till tape measure to bottom of inlet pipe. Did the same thing with the vent tube, snaked down the tape measure then with a point of reference pulled up until the tape hit bottom of vent pipe. Are the insides of the tanks ever thicker in some spots to get help slope material out of the tank?

Bottom of most tanks sloped, higher at inlet, slopes toward drain, maybe only 2" deep at inlet. My inlet pipe only 3/4" from bottom, so easy clog. 2" wud be great.

Appreciate the comment. I've only used the camper once so I'm hoping it will be fine. Hard to tell from the outside if there's any slopes as it doesn't show much except the outlet is lower. I'm going to measure how many gallons from empty to full till the water hits bottom of inlet. We're camping local and will empty it out and flush when we get there.

and one other thought: If 5.5" Outside at INLET, maybe only 3.5 INSIDE, so 2" clearance to bottom maybe only 1" into tank, which is probably perfect/ MIN?

I will also note for you that many bath sinks drain to the black tank also to add more water, if you thought it went to gray?

Had same problem with a 2007 class "c" Gulfstream Yellowstone. I shortened the vent pipe by cutting out 2 inches and used a compression fitting sleeve. Now can use all of the tank without pressure buildup causing emissions from toliet.

Update: measurements

So we took the camper for its second test trial. I went out and measured the gallons In the black tank empty using a flow meter with garden hose prior to departure. From empty i have 22 gallons to bottom of inlet and 27 gallons maximum capacity before it came up the inlet. I thought I would get a little more out of it since it was a 35 gallon tank but 25 ish is good enough. The black tank lasts about 2.5 days with my family of 5. Still thinking if inlet and vent were higher it would give us more capacity but not the end of the world.
