Hello, I am hoping to get some help on generator use for my 199DD Ameri lite. I am making a trip to Tennessee in August and we are boondocking. I have a Champion duel fuel 3500W generator that I bought for hurricane use at home. It has a 30amp trailer port on it. Is the trailer able to handle the power from it and what cab out the trailer battery as far as it’s charging?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated…

Thanks in advance!

Yes that portable generator is compatible with your RV shore power input. As to charging the RV battery, it will get a charge from the RV's 12 volt converter the duration of time that the generator is running and connected. Not the most efficient way to bulk charge your RV battery, but simple and works with little intervention.

When I was seriously dry camping (off road elk hunting camp in winter...) I used a small DC generator setup that gave me as much as 80 amps of 12 volts to bulk charge my camp trailer battery. The battery in my case was a series stack of two 6 volt golf cart batteries because they yielded a higher amount of storage and supported deep discharge in the colder weather...

That generator could recharge the battery bank on about a quart of oil/gas mix -- it was a two stroke engine. The unit was branded by Coleman, but made by Subaru. It was tiny and easy to pack, but annoyingly loud so it only ran about once a week or a little more often as needed.

could someone help I have signed onto the forum for the first time and want to make a post but can't figure out how

...seems like you posted the entry above... What are your specific questions???

Hey Chuck, I hooked up my surge protector to the generator and it says open ground. Is that a problem for using it on the trailer? If not what do I need to do to fix this?

Open ground is a safety issue, but may not show up in terms of function... Best to get it checked out and repaired/properly wired.
