I am new to this and bought the "Geargo" RV surge protector 30amp. I then read somewhere in reddit these are no good and that no surge protector under $200 is any good. So before I buy something expensive to dangle off the power pole and potentially get stolen I am wondering what is everyone's experience and opinion here?

Add surge on inside.

You can add one to the shore power line on the inside of the coach. If you have a generator you might think about adding it between the transfer switch and the breaker panel.
We have a Progressive Industries system and have good service from it. We no longer worry about our surge protection walking away.
